Plex is the best!

Plex Review

Over the last few years I have tested and experimented with all of the current media center applications (Plex, Boxee, XMBC, TVersity, Windows Media Center) and Plex by far has blown me away.  Let me be clear, I have no affiliation with the open source application Plex.  If you are a creating a new media center, or you are looking to upgrade yours, let me highlight some of the reasons why Plex is so awesome.

  • Plex is easy.  Simply put, Plex includes most of the features of the big competitors but packages them in a way that is very easy to use.  XBMC always feels way too techy and clunky for someone who isn’t  a complete media nerd.  (No offense XBMC users)
  • Plex includes a media manager.  This is huge for me as an OSX user as there are no other easy to use media managers for OSX and this one is so easy.  It will automatically parse your library and retrieve all the necessary metadata (movie poster, cast list, plot, etc.) and make it visible to the user.
  • With a little bit of port forwarding, Plex elevates itself to a new level with easy streaming to iOS and Android mobile devices.  This means you have your whole library in your hands all the time, forget iCloud and all the other cloud streaming services(Advanced guide coming soon).
  • Sickbeard and Couchpotato integrate perfectly with Plex, they will push the update directly to the application as soon as your new movies and episodes are ready to watch, no library rescanning required.
  • Plugin support which enables video game emulators, streaming from all the big players in the game, as well as other third party plugins. (Guides to come as well).

These are just a few of the reasons I prefer Plex over the other guys, I’m not preaching Plex is the best, but if you want an incredibly easy, automated media center that everyone in your family can use; Plex is the way to go.  If you want to learn more, check out our guides as they will provide you with all the tools you need to get your own Plex media center up and running in no time flat.
