How to Watch NHL Gamecenter in XBMC

NHL Gamecenter add-on thread in the XBMC forums

The NHL season is winding down, but for those of you using NHL Gamecenter to follow your favorite team, it sure would be nice to have a way to integrate that into your existing XBMC based HTPC.

Thankfully, XBMC user carb0 has created an add-on for XBMC that lets you log in to your Gamecenter account and watch classic (“Vault”) games, condensed games (highlights) and archived games from this season and last. The add-on gives you the choice of home or away feeds and can stream games in 720p. The streams look fantastic, but I had some stuttering on my home wireless N network when playing the streams in HD. The lower definition setting still looked outstanding on my 49″ screen and there was much less stuttering so I’d recommend that for now.

THIS ADD-ON DOES NOT CURRENTLY STREAM LIVE GAMES. Unfortunately, that functionality is broken at the moment. There appears to be a fix from XBMC user apok located here: FIX . Keep an eye on the XBMC forum thread for this add-on for an official fix.

I have not gotten the fix to work successfully, but I have verified that the other functions of the add-on work just fine.

I will continue to recommend this add-on, even though it’s currently missing the key functionality of live games. The creator seems to be on top of the issue and hopefully will roll apok’s fix into his next version.

It goes without saying that you need an NHL Gamecenter account to successfully use this add-on.

Install Process

Unfortunately, this addon is not in the official XBMC.org repository, so you’ll have to add it manually.

  • Do this by downloading the repository from here: http://carb0s-repo.googlecode.com/svn/repository.carb0s.zip
  • After the download finishes, back in XBMC go to “Settings”->”Add-Ons”->”Install from zip file” and then navigate to wherever you downloaded that repository to and select the zip file you downloaded.
  • After it installs, go back to “Settings”->”Add-Ons” and choose “Get Add-Ons”
  • Choose “Carb0’s XBMC Add-Ons”->”Video Add-ons”->NHL Gamecenter->Install
  • After the install finishes, select the add-on again and go to the Settings.
  • Enter in your NHL Gamecenter username and password in the appropriate fields.
  • Select the quality you’d like to view your streams in (I recommend the “SD(1600 kbit/s)” quality setting)
  • If you’re running this on Dharma (though we recommend using Eden), select “Use RTMP Streams”
  • Select “Ok” and start using the add-on.
