How to install PLEX Apple TV 2G
Hopefully by now you have jailbroken your Apple TV 2G. Now it’s time to install a media center. In our opinion Plex Media Center is one of the most powerful open-source freeware media players available. It began as a small hobby project but has evolved into a startup company. Lucky for us they have developed a client for the Apple TV 2G. It’s free of charge and will allow us to play almost any video file. Something the ATV 2G out of the box cannot do. The Plex team continues to develop the client and new features are being added regularly. At first, the app was buggy, but the kinks have been worked out. I have been using the latest version for over a month and it is very stable. Okay, let’s install PLEX Apple TV 2G client.
Pre-ATV 2G Plex Install checklist
1. Apple TV 2G has been jailbroken. Check out our guide to jailbreaking with Seas0nPass.
2. PC or Mac connected to the same network as ATV 2G
3. A SHH Client Windows (Putty) or Mac (Terminal
Step 1: Get the IP Address of your ATV 2G. To do so navigate to Settings > General > Network.
Step 2: Launch SSH Client
MAC: Open Terminal and type: ssh root@192.168.1.104(Your IP Address)
Windows: Open Putty and fill in:
Host Name: Your IP Address
Port: 22
Connection Type: SSH
Step 3: Logging into the Apple TV 2G
Mac: You will be asked for a password, which if you did not change is: “alpine“ without the quotations.
Windows: Type in “root” as the login without the quotations
Step 3.1(WINDOWS ONLY): Logging into the Apple TV 2G – Windows Only
Windows: You will be asked for a password, which if you did not change is: “alpine” without the quotations.
Type in “alpine” without the quotations. Note that you will not see the cursor move as you enter the passcode. Hit enter once typed.
You can now begin the Plex Apple TV 2G client installation.

MAC and Windows: echo “deb http://www.ambertation.de ./downloads/PLEX/” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plex.list

Step 5: Update Cydia Database
Type the following command…

(TIP: You might be prompted to confirm the command with a Yes (Y) or No (N). If so, type in Y to executed the command)

Apple iOS 4.2 or older: KillallLowTide
Once your ATV 2G restarts, you will find the plex apple tv client ready to stream! See the screenshot below.
Client Upgrade: Upgrading to latest PLEX Apple TV 2G client

Congratulations, you have successfully installed PLEX Apple TV 2G client on your hardware. Please let us know if you have questions and we will do our best to assist.
Did everything correctly and PLEX did not came up.
The device is jailbroken correctly using seas0npass.
Any help ??
***Please remember to use the software at your own risk and don’t blame anyone except yourself if your ATV blows up in the process.***
Marcelo, sorry for the delay. I’ll be happy to assist you. Please SSH back into your Apple TV 2G. Input the following commands in order exactly as they appear.
apt-get remove com.plex.client-plugin
rm -rf /Applications/AppleTV.app/Appliances/PLEX.frappliance
rm -rf /Applications/Lowtide.app/Appliances/PLEX.frappliance
rm /User/Library/Preferences/com.plex.client-plugin.plist
apt-get update
apt-get install com.plex.client-plugin
Something went wrong during your original installation. Please tell me how these steps worked out for you. Thanks!
I completed all the steps and the ATV rebooted, but no plex on my options. Any tips?
Try to re-do it, if you don’t have Plex as an option you most likely missed a small step. Let us know how that does for you!
I keep getting failed connection to mirrors.xbmc.org. Everything goes fine up until then. Any clue as to why? (FYI this is my first time with jailbreaking. I’m very experienced in android rooting and ADB but have no experience with iOS).
EDIT: I tried installing it anyways and the ATV would boot to the Apple (I’m assuming splash screen) then it would go black and eventually turn off. I was still able to run commands via SSH so I used the command
apt-get remove com.plex.client-plugin and about 2 seconds after doing so the ATV booted normally. Very odd.
Hi Kenny,
At what step do you get the failed connection to mirrors.xbmc.org error?
thank you very much, man. you saved me reinstall! something is definitely wrong here with these instructions, or the site plex is downloading from if all these people are having the problem. i’ve ssh’d before so i *kinda* know what i’m doing and it still didn’t work.
No go here. Using Mac path on 4.4.4 Seas0npass Jailbroken ATV.
All goes fine until the reboot. Then it’s a black screen flash, a thin green horizontal line draws from left to right, and then another flash, repeat,
Tried 21 Sept removal instructions above but just a few seconds after doing the first line above, I’m back in the menu. The second and 3rd lines go smooth. The 4th gives not found. And reinstalling ultimately puts me back to the flash/line/flash mode.
Ideas/tips welcome!
Hey… so when it said to reboot the appleTV, the power cord got disconnected… when plugging it back in, i cannot use the command prompt and nothing comes up on the screen. did i royally F myself?
Have you tried to connect mini usb and open iTunes. Then try to do a restore and do the whole thing all over again?
I just finished the restore process and see your response, hope it works! So this software will allow me to watch more than just iTunes movies? Im looking for something to allow me to more effectively wirelessly connect my laptop
You are the best man… hope this time i dont get ahead of myself! haha
ok… fail. the “kill” prompts did not work, the messages i got was “No matching processes were found” for killall AppleTV, and “-sh: KillallLowTide: command not found”. now with restarting it will not load past the “apple” screen. I will restore it again but do you have any suggestions?
Hi,
For some reason when I type the IP address I get a response: error 22 connection refused.
I have a Mac Pro, I am using the correct IP and I have jailbroken correctly with pwnage.
Can you help me, please!??
I’m getting the same problem as futbol4272; jailbreaking with Seas0npass works as a charm (I got the Seas0npass logo on the ATV home screen). Went through the SSH installment (on Windows), and then a no-go on the killall command. Power off/on manually, and I only get to the Apple logo, then no response from the ATV. The power light blinks for a couple of seconds, then comes on permanently. The light reacts when I use the remote control, but nothing happens. And it’s impossible to log in to the ATV using SSH.
Ultimately I did a factory reset through iTunes, then made a new jailbreaking, and then attempted the Plex install one more time. Same result.
We are working on re-testing and verifying the steps.. Check back this week for an updated guide.
Am getting the same problem as Freddy_L. Followed the instructions to the T several times but with same result.
We are revamping the guide and will have something up soon, I think the most recent patches changed something!
This is what I get:
AppleTV-i-Vardagsrum:~ root# apt-get update
E: Type ‘.deb’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plex.list
Can someone please tell me how to go on?
