Boxee TV Dongle Announced

Today Boxee announced that they are going to be releasing a USB TV tuner dongle that will allow you to connect your cable line into your Boxee box or HTPC via USB.  Not a revolutionary device for sure, but for the Boxee crowd it sounds OK.  Why just OK?  Well it only supports local channels according to early reports, so anyone with premium channels is screwed.  As most people are already realizing, this is not really practical for anything other than those people who want the convenience of everything in one spot.

Most modern TV’s already have a tuner built in, so all you would have to do is switch inputs and you are good to go.  But, Boxee being Boxee, they want to make it as easy as possible for the user to have all their content in one easy to view, easy to navigate interface.  This will probably appeal to a small niche of people, but for the masses it’s impractical and a unnecessary cost.  Why spend $50 on one of these, when you can invest a little bit more in a quality harmony remote if you don’t already have one?  That’s a smarter investment in my opinion.  I digress, and it is still a nifty device for the Boxee markets that really want all their content in one easy to use interface.  I can see those with families that don’t want to have the hassle of changing inputs and explaining why things can’t all be centralized in one app, it makes sense.  My guess is the product will be on the market for less than a year and be pulled for less than stellar performance.  Boxee should be focused on stealing some of the XBMC and Plex market, rather than these silly TV dongles.  Sound off in the comments on your thoughts.
