Recently a reader of ours asked us how he can wirelessly transmit his audio from his HTPC to his iDevice so he can view content on his HDTV without disturbing other family members who might be sleeping or busy with other things. Great question I thought, it can probably benefit alot of us that live in smaller apartments with roommates that don’t want to hear bombs exploding and guns being shot at 7:30AM.
The solution the he came up with was Airfoil. In a nutshell, what this application does is have a server running on your HTPC, and you connect to that server via remote clients. A remote client can be any of the following:
- iOS device
- Boxee Box
- Windows PC
- Mac
- Airport Express
- Third Party AirPlay devices
Source – Airfoil
There is also a Plex plugin (unofficial) that enables Plex to control airfoil speakers…

What I would like to see is something that transmits whatever audio is on the pc to my Android device. Say i’m watching a movie or Youtube video on my HTPC but instead of using the TV’s speakers it would use my Android’s speakers. This way I could have the option of hooking up my earphones to my Android and listen to it that way.
